Face-to-face is always the best option, especially when introducing rekenrek for the first time. A live session helps build understanding, confidence, and enthusiasm among staff. It creates a shared foundation and gets everyone on board from the start.

The tangible rekenreks are always the best choice for hands-on learning — they help students physically engage with the tool, which builds stronger number sense and understanding. However, the interactive rekenrek is a more affordable option and can still be very effective for student use, especially in digital settings. Importantly, the interactive version is essential for teaching and modeling during whole-class instruction or screen-sharing sessions.
It’s essential that each child has their own rekenrek. When every student has access to their own tool, it improves mathematical talk, encourages questioning, supports meaningful peer discussions, and — most importantly — allows each child to show what they know. Sharing may seem practical, but it limits engagement and learning opportunities.
